On August 28, 1963, in a monumental moment in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his powerful â€Å"I Have A Dream† speech in front of a crowd of over 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital. The year 1963 is of particular interest to me because it comes just 3 years after the end of the 1950s, a period that to this day receives mixed analysis when examined. To many the 1950s was considered to be America’s so called ‘happy days,’ but to others like Martin Luther King Jr. and the thousands of civil rights protestors that followed him and other leaders, the 1950s marked a period of social injustice and racial oppression. â€Å"I have a dream...† said Dr. King â€Å"that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal’† (King, 1964) It was not even a yea r later after delivering these famous words that on July 2nd, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed The Civil Rights of 1964 into law which permanently ended legal discrimination against individuals based on race, gender, nationality, and religion. Marriage is when a man and a woman are religiously committed to each other. In ancient Greek culture, this reflected on the relationship of the King and Queen, and Odysseus and Penelope, but they weren’t quite similar. The King and Queen had a closer relationship, while Odysseus and Penelope were always separated. Odysseus wasn’t really faithful while trying to get back to his wife. For example, the first time Odysseus wasn’t faithful was when he was captured by Calypso. To make the other people believe that she unsows her quilt to take longer. The better relationship is between the King and Queen. Unlike Penelope and Odysseus, they live together. In The Odyssey, they said â€Å"Alcinous slept in chambers deep in his loft house where the queen his wife arranged and share their bed. † That showed that they didn’t sleep in different beds, but that they slept together and shared it. The King and Queen are an example of what marriage should be like. Men and woman play different roles. In The Odyssey, there are different roles. For example, woman had to be seen with their husband and not any other man, because then they would be called a bad name. Also, men shouldn’t change in front of other woman while he’s married because it doesn’t show respect for their self and their wife. Ancient Greek culture had many rules, and they were better if you followed them. Marriage and courtship is very important to Greek culture. Not everyone takes it serious, for instance, Odysseus. He wasn’t faithful, and showed he doesn’t care for his wife back home. The King shows he’s very loving to his wife because they live together. Looking back over the five weeks of this course I smile. It was encouraging, fun, and required a lot of critical thinking. Learning how to send a message and receive one was a very important step toward my business career. It seems as though listening is an easy thing to do, but after this course, I realize it takes skills. Considering the feeling of a speaker and giving them uninterrupted attention was something never considered as significant. Everyone is guilty at some point in believing they can multi-task while another person is speaking. How rude we have been. The career building activities were helpful as well. Learning about our strengths and weaknesses gives us an opportunity to improve as a person. This course was helpful in improving in areas of strategizing, organizing, innovating and most important, entrepreneurial thinking. Without this course my goal focus would not be on my mind as a higher education is developed. Most of the knowledge learned in this course will be used in communicating with friends, family, and people on the job. Debating and presentations will come easy because of the information from the text in knowing the audience. In the classroom the small debates and student inputs in our class discussions were exciting. Furthermore, the research on our debate paper helped to look for creditable sources that made our team paper more believable. This was our first debate and every moment of the fifth week was as enjoyable as the first four weeks. This course makes me look forward to the future courses of business and I hope they are as interesting as the instructor.
